Becoming a member of the Sixth

Welcome to Legio VI FFC

This page is intended to get you started on the right track to preparing yourself for the Roman Impression.  When looking through stuff remember we reenact the period of 33-73AD, though we do allow some variation in gear a few years outside of that range.  We were largely a Judean/Eastern Legion.  And despite what the Rome Miniseries showed, it was LEG VI F that kidnapped Cleopatra!

We now have several "Categories of Membership":

I. E-Members (PROBATIO) Recurits that are interested in joining that have not yet made an event or purchased required fighting kit**.
II. Equipped E-Members (TIRO) Recurits that have purchased their fighting kit**, but have not been to an event* yet.
III. Members (HASTATI) Members that are active participants who have been to at least one event*.
IV. Equipped members (PRINCIPES) Members that have their fighting kit** gear and have been to two or more events* annually.
V. Full members (TRIARII) Members who are equipped with fighting kit** and make a minimum of Three events* annually
VI. The Iron Sides (FERRATA MILITES) Members that are only appointed by a unanimous vote of the Command Staff (Centurio, Optio, Signifir) for significant contribution, attendance, and work to make Legio VI better.  This is a lifetime appointment!

*Event is definied as any Scheduled activity as listed on the events page of the LEG VI website.

**Equipment Necessary to progress in rank is Caligae, Tunic, Balteus, Armor, Helm, Gladius, Pugio, Shield, Pila (Civilian members may also attain these different statuses based on their impressions' completeness.).

First: Talk to the Centurio or Optio about joining.  They will help you get orientated to the ancient genre of re-enacting and guide you through the process of becoming a member.

Second:  Join the Roman Army Talk Forum!  This is the information source for reconstruction, reenacting, events, and tons of expert advice literally from the guys who wrote the Osprey books, Dan Peterson, and a number of authors, curators, and academics who know their stuff!!

Third:  Join the LEG VI Yahoo group for emails and updates.  This is a place where you can ask any and all questions about the hobby, gear, and construction of gear with out feeling like a newcomer!  The yahoo group will also keep you informed on upcoming events.

Fourth:  This is a two part step.  Part 1: Print off a copy of the Drill Manual located on our website.  Part 2: Study up on Latin.  We know it is a dead language but you will want to know how to say hello, goodbye, yes sir, etc... in Latin.  Don't worry only a very small hand full of us speak it as a second language.

Fifth: Start looking at gear (always ask us before you buy anything!).  We may be able to get you a better price or supplier!  Below is a list of of basic equipment needed  for your impression, it is also the order in which we recommend you purchase these items.  Check out the Equipment of the Legionary as well as the Handbook for descriptions of these items and good suppliers for them.

I) Caligae/Sandals

II) Tunica/Tunic

III) Balteus/Belt

IV) Pugio/Dagger

***Remember***
There is no rush to purchase anything.  The Legion has about 20 complete kits you can borrow until you complete your kit!  If you have the gift of being a good craftsman, nearly everything can be built from scratch!  Check out our Handbook for Legionaries as well as the Legio XX handbook.  They have step by step designs, plans, and more!  Legio XX, in some areas, has higher standards than ours so you will not be misguided in that area.

Sixth:  Borrow or check out some books. (** = means essential)
- Roman Military Equipment, M.C. Bishop & J.C.N. Coulston **
- The Roman Army, Adrian Goldsworthy **
- The Roman Soldier, G.R. Watson
- The Roman Imperial Army, Graham Webster
- The Roman Army from Caesar to Trajan, Michael Simkins
- The Roman Legions Recreated in Color Photographs, Dan Petersen **
- Greece and Rome at War, Peter Connolly **
- The Conquest of Gaul, Caesar

This is just a start, there are plenty more books out there for you!  Some can be found on the Legion Library and References page.

Finally:  If you have a question, ask the group, one of us will know the answer or get you in the right direction.  The only thing we require is a noble attitude, we can supply the rest!
