September 11, 2010 ~ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

On 2nd Saturday, September 11, Roper Mountain Science Center will be conquered by a Roman Legion.  Re-enactors from one of the greatest and most advanced civilizations that the world has ever known will share the military might, engineering genius, and ancient technology of the Roman Empire.

Leg VI is proud to announce that we have been selected for a "2nd Saturday" Event at the Roper mountain Science Center in Greenville, SC!  The event will be a "mini-castra" with 800 to 1200 students and parents coming out to see the glory that was Rome.  All Roman Re-enactors are invited to attend.  We would like civilian, barbarian, and Gladiator impressions too, as we have space for the Arena, Camp display, Drill area, Artillery display, engineering display, SOTW, and some supporting events hosted by students and Roper Mountian staff.

Saturday Jollification:
Stax Grill (local restaurant that serves steak with a Greek flair).

Book the room 14 days early and save 20%.  Continental B-fast.  $60 an night.
Nicer Alternative: Comfort Inn and Suites located at 831 Congaree Road $95
ON SITE CAMPING IS ALLOWED!  Hay will be available.
Fire pit allowed, no food vendor on site, so unless you want to buy candy bars from SOTW you need to plan for lunch and snacks.  We'd like to pick up some period foods to share, so hit the yahoo group to volunteer to bring something to share if you can.  Olives, Flat breads, Pears, Apples, Grapes, Cheeses, and Sausages... or surprise us!
We want to make a concerted effort to keep the camp as period as possible, so modern food can be consumed at the SOTW tent instead of in camp.  Also means we all need to pitch in to keep the tents and such prepped period style.
Drinking water onsite, and SOTW will have water and cokes.
The GREENVILLE JOURNAL will be onsite friday afternoon to do an article for Saturday as well as "Your Carolina" for a TV segment.  I need as many guys as possible so we can get set up and looking pretty for those!!
Supermarket/Walmart: There are a couple of Walmarts that are very close (both have the supermarket inside).  One is located on Woodruff Road and one is just off Pelham Road.  They are both within 2-3 miles of the RMSC.

About Roper Mountain:

Roper Mountain Science Center exists because of a unique partnership of public ownership, corporate sponsorship, private support, and volunteers. The primary mission of the center is to foster enhanced learning and growth opportunities through educational excellence and high quality instructional programs for students, teachers, and the general public. Science enrichment programs are presented in an exciting and entertaining manner that makes learning fun.

The center is owned by the School District of Greenville County, which provides the full-time staff and operational support. A private support group, the Roper Mountain Science Center Association, actively supports and promotes the center through memberships and corporate sponsorships.

Because Roper Mountain Science Center is a facility of the School District of Greenville County, the primary program participants are that county's school children. Programs in all areas of science correlate to the science curriculum of the district, and provide reinforcement for concepts studied in the classroom. Schools from other districts in the state may participate in the center's programs for a fee.

During the summer, many of the area's children participate in 4-day "Science for Fun" mini-courses at the center. Groups study a wide variety of topics such as Lego Logo, rocketry, kitchen chemistry, unusual pets, seashore critters, and many others.

Public programs at the center are limited to Friday "Starry Nights" programs and the Second Saturday public day. In addition, the nature trails, arboretum, and butterfly garden are available to the public any time the main gate is open. By enhancing the quality of life to the public through education, the science center serves as a positive force in the economic development of the upstate region of South Carolina.

Many of the center's activities are made possible or enhanced by active volunteer support. Opportunities to help at the center represent a wide variety of interests and skills-everything from plant and animal care to being a costumed living history farm volunteer.

Roper Mountain Science Center also understands the importance of teacher training in science education. After-school teacher workshops and mini-courses abound during the school year. However, the most intense teacher workshops occur in the summer. The largest one of these is the Science P.L.U.S. Institute, funded by a South Carolina EIA Grant, which benefits several hundred public school science teachers each year.

Although school programs are the main focus of the center's efforts, the areas of teacher education, summer science, and public programs certainly round out the services provided by this unique facility. It is truly a place where "Science is for Everyone"!
