The Beast!  A period reconstructed Roman Catapulta that can shoot over 600 feet!  Listen to her growl as we winch it back.  An incredibel period reconstruction by Leg VI Engineer Kent Nilsson.

 

The Tripastos:  Like the american army, the Roman army built far more than it destroyed.  The Trispastos is an example of a Roman crane of the type that would have been used to build the great aquaducts and buildings of Rome.

 

The Medici:  a Roman army "Medic" will display the tools of his trade and talk about the surprisingly modern Roman Medicine and treating battlefield wounds in te first century.

 

The Cavalry:  If we can getthe horse safely to Castra, you will see one of the only fully reconstructed Roman Cavalrymen in North America!

 

Gladiator Display:  Martin Keeley presents the Gladiators in his art and words!  Be sure to visit the gorgeous diplay by the arena for more information on the Gladiators.

 

Soldier of Rome Author James Mace:  James returns to Castra with his latest installment in the Soldier of Rome series.  He will be signing books in the marketplace at designated times throughout the event.  Be sure to pick one up!  You may even recognize some of the characters on the covers!!!

 

Cherusci Tribe: We welcome our fledgling German Barbarian group to Castra Romana!  Every army needs and enemy!  Check out the Barbarian camp.

 

Photo Booth:  Take a picture you will never forget!  Dress out in Roman Armor and have a photo taken for a minimal charge.  For a few moments, you can feel the "weight" of empire, and take home a souvenir you will never forget!!

 

Pottery Wheel: Participants will see a  pottery wheel.  purchase hand made Roman era reproduction items.  Pottery demonstrations by Legio VI Supporter Karen Deloach of Earthen Vessels and Flavia Sabina of SOTW.

 

Weapons Training: Participants will be able to train with double weighted weapons and shields, and actual post training with their gladius.  Pila range with targets will also be available for practice.

 

Military Drills:  Using the drill manual Commands, Centurio Justus and Optio Marcus will drill the soldiers of the legion in true Roman Style.

 

Popina Magnifico:  Legio VIs (ok... really she is from Leg XI) own gourmet chef will have treats throughout the day for participants to try out, including her now famous Roman Sausage dogs!!

 

Centurios Convivium:  A grand Roman Feast will be held for the first 50 participants.  All foods and placesettings will be in proper Roman Style this promises to be a most excellent time for all our re-enactors... the food alone is worth the trip!

 

Kids Cohort:  Run throughout the day Saturday by several of Legio VI's young (and therefore overly energetic) Soldiers, children under 14 will be issued a shield and (plastic) sword and trained in the basics of Roman Soldiering!  In 2003, 95 kids got to participate!!  What a great way to learn about the armies of Rome.

 

Roman Armamentarium: Arms and Armor display by Soul of the Warrior featureing the latest in Legion Armory and Deepeeka equipments.  While primarily an educational display, items will be available for purchase.  Compare the equipment of the armies of the Principate with the Imperial units we represent.

 

Ludus Gladiatore: Gladiator exhibitions and lectures.  Ludus Gladiatore will be in attendance.  This is one of our most popular exhibits!  Meet at the large ARENA (you cannot miss it) to see the Editor start the Show!  See the art of Gladiator Martin!

 

Flavia's Fabricatio!  Roman Era jewelry hand made by the lady Flavia.  Hand knit items, decorated musical instruments, gourd drums, gourd bowls and much much more!  All period, and a really great display!

 

Flavia Secunda's Fruit Stand:  Roman era fruit and vegetable stand with snacks and goodies.

 

Scriveners Guild:  With homeschoolers books and historical works from the Roman and other periods!

 

Bible Museum:  View the display of period artifacts and reconstructions in our portable museum!

 

SC State Parks: Check out some of the SC State Parks merchandise at the SOTW booth.  Support Givhans and the SC State Parks!

 

Kim's Kandies will be offering home made candies and sweets!  Some authentic, and some may have a little chocolate (which the Romans did not have) but all will be tasty!

 

Confession of Justus: A Christian Drama ministry written and performed by the men of Legio VI.  We can come to YOUR church and "kick in the doors" to spread our unique Gospel message!

 

CASTRA ROTA The Roman restaurant and baker from Brunson, SC (Adriano Rota and family proprietors) will be offerring some Roman military treats for the ftroops friday as well as Roman Soup and meatballs for the public saturday.  They will also be baking some hand made breads from Italy and Germany, so be sure to pick up a loaf!
