Introducing the Ludus Militis

From the Site:  Roman reenacting is quickly gaining steam here in the United States. As our hobby has grown, one of the issues has been training the men. How did the Roman army train its soldiers—formations, individual weapon skills, engineering, marching, drilling, physical training, discipline, etc... While we all want to retain our own legion identity, working through a common training effort is much desired. The goal of this website is two fold:

  1. Just as the Ft. Lafe event in Arkansas has become a national site for an annual immersion/combat event, and the Castra Romana one of the larger public involvement weekends it is hoped that Ludus Militis events can be held each year, in places where legions from across North America can come for combined training events.
  2. As we develop a joint training program through discussion and compromise, a manual or guide is being developed to help all legions set up smaller, regional events, assisted by the central organization, and using the same curriculum as will be found at other training camps elsewhere.

At these events, there will be no legion distinctions, with all reenactors divided into contubernia within one camp. Instructors trained in this system will school the soldiers in an intensive training program for the weekend.
